I began this project midway Season 4. Disillusioned with the plot, I’m still attached to the show for the almost radical representation of POC characters. Not perfect in anyway, OITNB created platforms for actresses of many backgrounds to appear regularly in the eyeballs of anyone with Netflix. The actresses deserve celebration for their history, challenges, and performances. Text from my instagram captions included.
This is an ongoing series.
Danielle Brooks. Danielle Brooks grew up singing in the church and juggled filming oitnb with being on broadway in The Color Purple. She has recently started speaking publicly about losing her v in college, and it’s the #1 most hilarious/relatable. She’s the coolest.
Diane Guerrero! Diane actually inspired this whole series when I heard her interview on Death Sex and Money. Her parents were deported when she was 14 and she’s been hustling for herself ever since. Besides being in two killer shows (also Jane the Virgin) she also had a face almost too symmetrical for me to capture.
Lori Tan Chinn!! If you know me even a little bit you could easily assume that LTC’s portrayal of Chang is by far my fav character. She has been acting since the 80s and wears pink hair and tiny tiaras to the OITNB red carpets. Also we have the same eyebrows.
Samira Wiley. Samira graduated from Julliard one year ahead of Danielle Brooks. When she was love-lorn in season 2, off-screen she swooped up OITNB writer Lauren Morelli from the clutches of heteronormativity and now they are officially my fav celeb couple to stalk.
